Graeme Base does beautiful children's book illustrations. I got out a book by Julie Watts from the library and having been using it to influence my own work.
I also took a lot of reference on cartoon style from modern cartoon shows Steven Universe and Gravity Falls. These shows are very popular for a number of reasons, one of which is of course the character design and style
